Low Serotonin levels cause SIDS

February 4, 2010 by cbowman

sleeping_babyAt last! Researchers may have solved the mystery of what causes some babies die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Levels of serotonin, which regulate a baby’s sleep, heart rate and breathing, were 26 percent lower in the brainstems of babies who died of SIDS than in those of babies who died of other causes, the study says.

Serotonin normally helps babies respond to high carbon-dioxide levels during sleep by helping them wake up and shift their head position to get fresh air.

Currently, there is no test to determine which infants may be at risk for SIDS. To avoid the risk of SIDS, parents should make sure that babies can breathe uninhibited during sleep: Place babies on their backs to avoid their rolling over, don’t over-bundle the baby, and don’t leave loose bedding or stuffed toys in the crib.

article-0-05F8AF300000044D-483_468x286Did you know that one in eight babies born in our country is premature? Even worse, the rate of premature birth in America is higher than that of most other developed nations!

This week The March of Dimes issued its Premature Birth Report Card, which grades each state’s rate of preterm birth.

Georgia scored an “F”.

The report card grades each state’s rate of preterm birth compared to the nation’s objective of a 7.6 percent or less preterm birth rate by 2010. Georgia’s preterm birth rate was 13.6 percent.

A mother’s thoughts on National Adoption Day

November 1, 2009 by cbowman

Contributed by Cathie Morris, adoptive mother and MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) member

“Mommmmm!  Mommy!”  Common words heard everyday by everyone in MOPS – right?

As women, we are blessed to become mothers.  For some it may be easy. For others, it may be a frustrating process that sometimes does not turn out in the way we had hoped.

But as we all know, God has a plan for our life.  Some women are quite content without children.  While others have a deep seeded longing to nurture a child or children.

Being a mother is the most valuable, demanding, and exhausting and rewarding job you will ever have on this earth!  And children are gifts from God no matter how they may come into our lives.

November is National Adoption Month, a month set aside by the President of the United States since 1976 to observe, celebrate and raise awareness about adoption of children of all ages and those in foster care.

As an adoptive mother of a wonderful little boy, I encourage you to pray for all adoptee and foster children that are looking for loving and giving homes.  That God will grant their prayers and every child will be able to say the word, “Mommy!”

EDITOR’S NOTE: November 21, 2009, marks the 10th anniversary of National Adoption Day — a national day of celebration of adoptive families and an opportunity for courts to open their doors and finalize the adoptions of children from foster care. Since 2000, more than 25,000 children have had their adoptions finalized on National Adoption Day.
