More and more parents in the Columbus/Phenix City area are turning to homeschooling instead of public or private education for their children.
If you are considering this big commitment, check out the following support groups and co-ops before making the plunge.
The Columbus/Phenix City area has a large and active home schooling network. Plug in and you’ll find the support you need to succeed.
L.I.G.H.T. (Leaders In Godly Home Teaching) consists of 150+ families in the Columbus/ Phenix City area with children ranging in grade levels from pre-kindergarten to college sophomores. This Christian organization is dedicated to supporting Godly home training of children, but a statement of faith is not required to join. Its function is to provide encouragement, prayerful support and communication among all homeschooling families; information on education techniques and curriculum; coordination of group activities; and monitoring of legislation related to home schools.
Chattahoochee Valley Homeschoolers consists of 42 home schooling families in Cataula. Sends out about 25 newsletters bi-monthly to members.
Amazing Mondays Co-op is an active support group for homeschooling families. The group meets every Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Northside Recreation Center in Columbus to share an educational activity together. The group also plans field trips throughout the year that are educational and fun. Parents are able to discuss and share homeschool methods, struggles, questions, and any concerns. The group is open to any and all homeschool families.
Freedom Home Schoolers was created in 2005 to support homeschooling families in the Phenix City/Columbus area regardless of religious affiliation. Support for each family is offered through group activities, co-ops, field trips, or perhaps just a chance to sit and chat with other homeschooling families. Family membership is $20 for the school year. For more information, send an email to membership@freedomhomeschoolers.com
Fort Benning Homeschoolers was developed to give general information on homeschooling to active duty, retired, Reserve and National Guard families in the Fort Benning, Georgia area. Click here to join this egroup.
Georgia Homeschool Field Trips Meetup
Founded in August 2009, the purpose of this Meetup is to provide activities and resources for parents who want field trips and learning experience for their homeschoolers. I will be posting activities throughout the state of Georgia. We will cover all cities and towns in Georgia. But I will mainly cover Columbus, and Atlanta Georgia. II am hoping it will help us connect with other local families taking responsibility for educating their children by using resources in our local community. Please jump in and share your ideas for field trips.
Note: Valley Parent magazine published an excellent article about homeschooling in January 2007. To read it, click here.
