As the Muscogee County School District prepares to ask for another 1 percent sales tax for school construction, talk about the district’s two previous sales tax campaigns is entering the dialogue.

If approved by voters, the 2009 SPLOST would last five years or until the district collects $223 million to complete a variety of capital projects. The projects include five new schools — a new Carver High, a middle school, two elementary schools and a fine arts academy — additions to Northside High and Richards Middle, and athletics and technology upgrades.

Opponent of the proposed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, brought up concerns about the low revenue collections from the district’s first SPLOST in 1997 and the district’s spending of the monies from the 2003 SPLOST for the new administration building on Macon Road.

Citizens of Muscogee County will have the opportunity to decide on a proposed new SPLOST on Tuesday, September 15, 2009.

Typically developing children thrive in a developmentally appropriated program, while children on the autism spectrum receive individualized treatment plans in addition.

The program is an eclectic and comprehensive approach, designed by Dr. Caroline Gomez. It is based on the latest autism research and meets the recommendations/priorities set forth by the National Research Council, commissioned at the request of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education.

AP: Ouch! Early flu shot season comes with 3 jabs

ATLANTA – Get ready to roll up your sleeve three times for flu shots this fall. That’s right, three times. This year’s flu season is shaping up to be a very different one. Most people will need one shot for the regular seasonal flu and probably two others to protect against the new swine flu.

Experts suggest you get that first shot as early as this month — if you can find it.

Health officials traditionally kick off an autumn vaccine campaign against seasonal flu in late September or October with a news conference in Washington D.C. But this year, the news conference — which features the CDC director — has been moved up to Sept. 10.

Unofficially, the push for seasonal vaccinations begins even sooner, some health officials said.

“As soon as it becomes available, we’ll be encouraging people to get it,” said Carol Schriber, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Classes start for Muscogee County students in less than three weeks and most schools are already sending out supply lists for students.

The lists vary from school to school and classroom to classroom. Most lists include things like notebooks, pencils, markers, scissors and tissues for elementary and middle school students, and notebooks and pens for high school students — but students may not need all the items on the first day of classes, Aug. 6.
