Akeelah is an 11- year old girl growing up in a tough Chicago neighborhood. She is surrounded by realistic obstacles many young people face—crime, violence, drug abuse and the stress of wanting a better life. When her teacher pressures her into competing in her school’s Spelling Bee, Akeelah meets other competitors from different walks of life. She rises to the challenge of the Bee and learns that through hard work, perseverance, and friendship, words can change her world.
February 21, 22, 28, 29 at 7PM & February 22, 23, and March 1 at 2PM
February 29 at 2pm will be a Sensory Friendly Performance. During this performance, we have added accommodations for patrons with sensory-processing disorders, PTSD or Autism. For instance, house lights will remain half lit, trigger-warning lights may illuminate and we will offer a safe space in our lobby for over-stimulated patrons. This is not a condensed show.
