The Lafayette Theatre Company’s one-act version of John Lennon & Me brought four awards home from the Georgia Theatre Conference’s Community Theatre Festival in Savannah, Georgia last October. The cast advances to the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) In Knoxville, TN in March. The play was originally performed by the theatre company in May of 2017 during Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
The main character of the play is an imaginative teenage girl who is battling Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a rare, genetic disease that progressively limits the ability to breathe. The recent passing of 21-year-old Claire Wineland, author and social media personality who shared her unique outlook on life as a result of living with CF, has brought home the urgency of continuing to support research for this disease. Because of medical advances and increasing awareness, children with CF now have the opportunity to become adults, with a median survival rate of over 40 years. The cast and crew are hopeful that this trend will continue and that, soon, a cure will be found for cystic fibrosis and the many other diseases threatening the lives of our youth.
In addition to spreading awareness of CF and the need for continued support for medical research, the cast is primarily comprised of academy students who will be putting their theatrical skills and talents into practice in a unique way. They will be performing for a panel of adjudicators who offer feedback for improvement on their skills and working together within strict guidelines for competition. Since all of their set, props, cast and crew members begin in a 10’x10’ space and create a hospital in 10 minutes, they are having to troubleshoot in ways that do not happen during their regular productions. They will also have the opportunity to attend workshops and performances from four festivals.
You can help with our final dress rehearsal and support travel funds with the purchase of an $8 reserved seat for a performance on February 22nd at 7pm, February 23rd or 24th at 3pm. The students are working together to raise the funds required for this project, while continuously promoting the awareness of CF and the benefits of medical research.
